Program for “I Protest” May 29 – June 1

Message from the Artistic Director

As I pondered what to write here I scanned previous programs. I realize that my words in January ring true today: I am blessed with family, friends, health, and the opportunity to create. We’ve had more variables than usual through the process, and I am grateful for the talent and time given by each participant listed in this program. I am equally grateful for each audience member, sponsor, or board member who supports our work. Thank you, and enjoy the show.

“I was Asked to Write a Piece about ICE” (or “The News Cycle”) by Carolynne Wilcox

Originally written as a single-voice spoken word poem,I was Asked to Write a Piece About Ice(Or,The News Cycle) was created in response to exactly that – being asked to write a piece about ICE in early February for a showcase that was supposed to happen in early May, but was postponed. The writer grapples with the awfulness (and potential, very personal danger) of ICE, while also feeling like the news cycle is so fast, furious and virulent, their attention has been swept far, far away from the subject at hand by the “newer, shinier” travesties (cough *distractions* cough) of the current regime, where turning towards the “bigger and badder” sensationalist news stories has become daily and commonplace.

“Parallel Ambitions” by Anna Tatelman

“Parallel Ambitions” explores an alternate universe in which characters from two different Shakespearean texts collide. Separately, Lady Macbeth and Hamlet were foiled in their plans, but perhaps together, they can achieve a different end . . .

“Rook and Marcella Test the Waters” by Pamela Hobart Carter

Rook and Marcella are in trouble. Rook shouldn’t have touched Marcella in public but he had to fish her out of the water when it looked to him as if she were drowning. (She was.) They must attend a violations hearing where their chances of being let off are slim. But, they are two creative types with lots of ideas. Except they’re not supposed to meet before the hearing. Fortunately, Rook knows the training campus so well that he might be able to keep them hidden long enough to plan a possible out.
