We are thrilled to announce another production*, a Festival of Jules Maes Plays.
We are now accepting submissions of short plays, 10 – 15 pages in length for our September show. There are three requirements for each script: Jules Maes must be a character in the play; the phrase, “oldest bar in Seattle” must be included in the dialogue, and the Olympia Brewing tray that currently sits in the locked cabinet by the front booth at the Saloon must be used in the play. 2 – 4 characters, please. Please submit your play to (Don’t Limit) Kevin Finney at ksfinns@comcast.net by August 1, 2023.
Intrigued? Please plan to come to our June production*, “A Solstice Parade of Plays, Poetry and Music” June 24th & 25th. T.J. O’Brien, great-nephew of Jules Maes, returns to the Drunken Owl stage to tell a few stories. He’ll straighten out “the oldest bar in Seattle” myth, explain those 5 cent tokens that are stamped “J Maes,” and share memories of the “Mayor of Georgetown.”
Jean Sherrard and Clay Eals, writers of the “Then and Now” column in the Seattle Times Sunday Pacific magazine, have shown interest in writing a column about the Jules Maes Saloon. They plan to publish the column on Sunday, September 10.
Dates and times have been set: Saturday, September 16th at 5:00, Sunday, September 17th at 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm.
*By using the term “production,” I’m differentiating from our monthly “show,” which consists of reading plays and poetry and playing music. For our productions, the poetry and music are similar, but rather than simply reading plays, our actors memorize their lines, wear costumes, and use props. We have scenery and light and sound effects. Our production in November sold out two shows, so we’ve added a third for June. If we sell out all three, we might add a fourth for September.
